Madina Okot Just Gave Us a Glimpse Into the Future — And It’s Scary

The Atlanta Dream’s present is bright.

Their future might be even brighter.

While much of the attention surrounding this team has understandably centered around Angel Reese, Rhyne Howard, and Allisha Gray, another young player quietly gave Dream fans a glimpse into what the next era of Atlanta basketball could look like.

Her name is Madina Okot.

And if Tuesday night against the Toronto Tempo was any indication, the future is downright terrifying for the rest of the WNBA.

Okot delivered the best game of her young career, recording a career-high 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting while grabbing seven rebounds in just 18 minutes off the bench. More impressively, she completely dominated the first half, scoring 16 of her 18 points and helping Atlanta establish an early lead they would never relinquish.

The final stat line was impressive:

  • 18 points
  • 7 rebounds
  • 7-of-9 shooting (77.8%)
  • 4-of-5 from the free-throw line
  • Efficiency rating of 23

But the box score only tells part of the story.

The Dream Made It A Point To Feed Her

One of the biggest takeaways from the game wasn’t just that Okot scored.

It was how she scored.

Atlanta made a conscious effort to get her involved offensively.

The Dream repeatedly went to her down low, trusting the rookie to make plays with her back to the basket. And every time Toronto tried to answer, Okot seemed to have another move, another finish, or another offensive rebound ready.

She didn’t simply capitalize on broken plays.

The offense ran through her at stretches.

And she responded.

For a young player still learning the WNBA game, that’s incredibly encouraging.

A First-Round Talent Falling Into Atlanta’s Lap

Many talent evaluators believed Madina Okot possessed first-round talent entering the draft.

The raw tools have always been obvious.

Size.

Athleticism.

Touch around the basket.

Rebounding.

Defensive upside.

The biggest question was simply development.

Could she put it all together?

Against the Tempo, Dream fans got a glimpse of the answer.

And it looked pretty special.

Imagine The Future Frontcourt

Here’s where things become really interesting.

Angel Reese isn’t going anywhere.

The Dream have found a cornerstone player who could anchor the franchise for the next decade.

Now imagine a developed Madina Okot next to her.

Think about that frontcourt for a second.

Angel Reese controlling the glass, pushing the pace, and facilitating.

Madina Okot providing interior scoring, rim protection, and athleticism.

Both players are young.

Both players are still developing.

And both players fit perfectly in Karl Smesko’s system.

It’s not crazy to imagine those two becoming one of the best frontcourts in the WNBA for years to come.

The Second Version Of The Dream Might Be Better

As good as this current team is, what makes Atlanta truly exciting is that they have a contingency plan already on the roster.

The current championship window revolves around:

  • Jordin Canada
  • Allisha Gray
  • Rhyne Howard
  • Angel Reese
  • Brionna Jones

But what about three or four years from now?

What if the next core looks something like:

  • Isobel Borlase
  • Indya Nivar
  • Rhyne Howard
  • Angel Reese
  • Madina Okot

That’s scary.

Not only because of the talent, but because those players fit together.

Length.

Athleticism.

Versatility.

Defense.

Playmaking.

Everything modern basketball demands.

Patience Is Key

It’s important not to overreact to one game.

Okot is still a young player.

There will be ups and downs.

There will be learning moments.

But this game showed exactly why the Dream have been so patient with her development.

You can’t teach her physical gifts.

You can’t teach her motor.

And you certainly can’t teach the confidence she played with against Toronto.

The tools are there.

The talent is there.

Now it’s about reps and development.

Final Thoughts

Madina Okot’s breakout performance wasn’t just about 18 points.

It was about possibility.

It was about seeing flashes of what she can become.

And perhaps more importantly, it was about seeing what the Atlanta Dream can become.

Because if Tuesday night was any indication, the Dream may have found more than just a rotational player.

They may have found their next frontcourt anchor.

And if a fully developed Madina Okot eventually joins forces with Angel Reese in the frontcourt?

The rest of the WNBA might have a problem.

A very big problem.
