Georgia Tech just took one of the biggest offseason hits imaginable.
According to multiple reports — first broken by ESPN’s Pete Thamel — Yellow Jackets offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner is leaving Atlanta to become the new OC at the University of Florida. The move comes after the Gators hired Tulane head coach Jon Sumrall as their next head coach, with Faulkner now following him to Gainesville.
And make no mistake about it — this one hurts.

Tech Tried to Keep Him
What makes this sting even more?
Georgia Tech did everything they could to keep Faulkner.
Per Thamel, Tech officials were willing to match Florida’s offer and make Faulkner the highest-paid offensive coordinator in the ACC. That’s not something Georgia Tech traditionally does. It shows just how valuable Faulkner had become to Brent Key and the program.
But in the end, Florida won the battle.
This is a program with SEC resources, massive NIL backing, and a head coach Faulkner is familiar with. Sometimes no matter how loyal or well-paid you are, the gravity of the SEC still pulls you in.

Why This Is a Huge Loss for Georgia Tech
Faulkner wasn’t just another assistant.
He was the engine behind Tech’s offensive resurgence.
Under his guidance:
- Georgia Tech became one of the most explosive offenses in the ACC
- Haynes King developed into a national star and Heisman candidate
- The Jackets consistently ranked among the top scoring teams in the conference
Over the summer, Faulkner signed a two-year, $1.5 million-per-year extension, making him:
- One of the highest-paid OCs in the ACC
- And part of the largest assistant coaching contract in Georgia Tech history
This wasn’t a guy with one foot out the door. By his own words, he sounded fully invested in Atlanta.
“There’s not another place in the world I’d rather be,” Faulkner said after signing his extension.
And yet… here we are.

The Offense He Built Won’t Be Easy to Replace
Faulkner’s system wasn’t just about scoring points. It was about:
- Developing quarterbacks
- Maximizing skill talent
- Creating balance
- Making Tech dangerous every single Saturday
He built continuity with Brent Key. He built trust with his staff. And he built belief across the roster.
Now, all of that resets.

What’s Next for Brent Key and Georgia Tech?
This is where the pressure shifts back to Brent Key.
To his credit, Key has already shown he can identify the right people. He hired Faulkner. But this will be his most important offensive hire yet.
The next OC must:
- Protect the quarterback pipeline
- Maintain the tempo and identity Faulkner created
- Continue developing Tech’s skill talent
- Keep the program competitive in the ACC immediately
This can’t be a rebuild hire.
It has to be a plug-and-play leader.
The Bigger Picture
Losing Faulkner hurts — bad. There’s no sugarcoating it. When elite assistants leave, especially on the offensive side of the ball, it can derail momentum fast.
But it also signals something important…
Georgia Tech is now a program whose assistants are in demand.
That didn’t use to be the case.
So yes — this is a painful loss.
But it also confirms that Tech football is officially relevant again.
Now the question becomes one that will define the next phase of this turnaround:
Who does Brent Key trust to carry the offense forward?
