Atlanta Dream at a Crossroads: The Next Two Games Against Indiana Will Tell Us Everything

The Atlanta Dream are approaching what may be the biggest stretch of their season so far.

Two games against the Indiana Fever.

On paper, they are just two regular-season games. But in reality, these games carry much more significance than that.

Why?

Because the Fever are the measuring stick.

They were the team that ended Atlanta’s season in the playoffs last year. And if the Dream truly want to contend for a championship, there is a very good chance they’ll have to go through Indiana again.

That’s why these games matter.

If Atlanta loses both games, I think there needs to be a serious conversation about the roster construction moving forward. Not because the season would be over, but because at some point you have to ask yourself a difficult question:

If you can’t beat Indiana in the regular season, how are you going to beat them in a playoff series?

That’s the reality.

This is a barometer series.

And there are four things I need to see from Atlanta.

1. Wins, Plain and Simple

This is the obvious one.

The Dream are currently 0-1 against Indiana this season, and the first matchup wasn’t particularly competitive. Atlanta lost by double digits and never seemed to establish control.

That can’t happen again.

I don’t care if it’s ugly.

I don’t care if it’s low-scoring.

I don’t care if it’s by one point.

The Dream need wins.

Indiana is an Eastern Conference contender. If Atlanta wants to be viewed in that same tier, they have to start proving it against teams they’ll likely see in the postseason.

These next two games are a chance to do exactly that.

2. The Stars Need to Show Up

Championship basketball is about stars.

As great as role players are, your best players have to be your best players.

Historically, Allisha Gray and Rhyne Howard haven’t had their best performances against Indiana. That’s concerning because these are the players Atlanta will depend on most when the playoffs arrive.

I need to see both players embrace the moment.

I need to see Allisha Gray attack.

I need to see Rhyne Howard create.

I need to see both players impose their will on the game.

Because eventually, Atlanta’s championship hopes will come down to those two.

The Dream can’t afford for their stars to disappear against elite competition.

3. Bench Scoring Has to Show Up

This may be the most important point.

Atlanta’s bench has been inconsistent all season, and against Indiana that issue becomes magnified.

The Fever are too talented to rely solely on the starters.

The Dream need contributions from:

  • Isobel Borlase
  • Te-Hina Paopao
  • Madina Okot
  • Indya Nivar

Someone has to provide energy.

Someone has to provide offense.

Someone has to help bridge the gap when the starters rest.

Because if the Dream can’t get bench production, they’ll continue putting enormous workloads on Allisha Gray, Rhyne Howard, and Angel Reese.

That’s not a sustainable formula in a playoff series.

4. Stop Aliyah Boston

Most fans think the Fever run through Caitlin Clark.

And to some degree, that’s true.

Others point to Kelsey Mitchell.

But I actually think Indiana is at its best when everything runs through Aliyah Boston.

She’s the engine that keeps everything together.

When Boston is touching the ball, the Fever become incredibly difficult to defend.

She creates opportunities for everyone around her.

She punishes mismatches.

She controls the paint.

And she makes life easier for Clark and Mitchell.

That’s why I believe slowing Aliyah Boston is the key to slowing Indiana.

Can Angel Reese handle the physicality?

Can Naz Hillmon provide help?

Can Madina Okot use her length?

Those questions may determine the outcome of these games.

Why This Stretch Matters

I’m not saying Atlanta needs to blow up the roster if they lose.

Far from it.

The Dream are still one of the better teams in the WNBA.

But at some point, championship teams have to answer the tough questions.

Can they beat the teams they’re most likely to face in the playoffs?

Can their stars perform when it matters?

Can the bench hold up?

Can they adjust against elite opponents?

These next two games against Indiana will provide answers.

Maybe Atlanta wins both and proves they belong among the league’s elite.

Maybe they split and show they’re still growing.

But if they lose both?

Then I think it’s fair to start having conversations about whether this roster needs another piece before the trade deadline.

Because make no mistake about it:

If the Atlanta Dream want to win a championship, they’ll probably have to go through Indiana.

And these next two games may tell us whether they’re ready for that challenge.
